He discovered his interest for music very early, participating in both
Jr. High and High School "All-City" choirs in Ny. Starting about the age of 12, he played his first gigs on guitar and piano in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village, and at jr.high school dances. He jammed with several blues and folk artists in these days..like Reverend Gary Davis, Luther Tucker, Arlen Roth ...
Graduated from the High School of Music and Art (New York) in 1969, where he played bassoon.
In the early 70s he started to travel and work in Latin America, where he learned spanish...and discovered Brazilian music.
In the Profesional Music Program at Berklee (end of the 70s), he specialized in Arranging (with Ted Pease ,Herb Pomeroy),and Harmony (Barrie Nettles, Ken Pullig) among others.
(He is now hoping to receive his diploma, after having completed pending course credits on his recent visit to Boston.)
At Berklee he expanded on his interest for Brazilian music,( leading his own group,"Mandinga", in clubs and several Berklee performances), and played with Jaques Morelembaum, Pascoal Meirelles, Rique Pantoja, Tomas San Miguel, Victor Mendoza, Ed Uribe ... all of whom have gone on to succesful careers.
In 1983 he moved to Spain to teach guitar and harmony at the "Aula de Música Moderna y Jazz" in Barcelona. ( 83-85). He also taught at the "Taller de Musicos", (Barcelona 86-88), writing the arranging courses, and participating with the Big Band del Taller, playing at the Intl. Jazz Festival in Barcelona.
While in Barcelona he worked as an arranger/ producer for Pedrito Diaz (historic Cuban percussionist), La Salseta de Poble Sec, etc.
He played with Jorge Rossi (Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkle), Dave Pybus, the great Canadian saxophonist..Sara Montiel...
His original musical "The History of Rock" was chosen for a tour of 60 shows in schools in Catalonia (85-86)
From 1989 he's lived in Mallorca, where he's played and recorded with many artists ... Jay Kaye (son of the famous bassist and guitarist Mary Kaye), Concha Buika (who's become an intl. star, recording her 2nd album with Chucho Valdez), John Tirado, The Pauls, Molly Duncan ( Average White Band, Dire Straights), Bobby Stern (Plays this summer in the N. Sea Jazz Fest. with the Charlie Mariano tribute, including Phillipe Catherine), Norbert Fimpel (Joe Cocker Band).
Chosen to record an Lp "Jazztá" for the Mallorca Jazz Fest. (91).
He played 2 times in the Intl Fest. of Classical Music in Deia with Concha Buika.
Opened for Richard Bona Group in the Jazz Voyeur Fest. in Mallorca,
and for Van Morrison at 2 local shows.
He was the guitarist for the musical "Rent" in a local production (2008) replica horloges.
He participates as music director, actor and instructor with old Vermont friends , Dragon Dance Theatre, in the Pan-American Institute for the Arts, a gathering of artists from different countries, as music director, actor and instructor. (Vermont, Montpellier and Armagnac, France 92, 03, 07, 09).
He's just finished his first short film "Escalibada y Los 40 Ladrones" (in english: "Roasted Peppers and the 40 Thieves", 2010) featuring his original music.
With his group "Louisiana Roth and Friends", he recorded an album including many originals and a version of Richard Bona's "Te Missea" with new original lyrics in english, for a local radio program (Radio Baleares 2008).
He's recently recorded 5 songs (4 originals) with his group "The Vibe", featuring Norbert Fimpel on sax.
At present, he teaches guitar and theory at Factoría de Són (a local school ,asociated with the Barcelona Conservatory Liceo), and at home, as well as giving intensive workshops in improvisation for all instruments.
Upcoming projects: a new record, featuring guitar.., a collaboration with lifelong friend Arlen Roth, who's an inspiration as a player and teacher... plans to apply for a teaching position at the new Berklee that will be opening in Valencia Spain ... and more!
