Arunima Gupta is a Kolkata born contemporary dancer cheap soccer jerseys from china and choreographer, now based in Kochi. She is the founder and Artistic Director of Aangik dance company. Trained under renowned dancers Dr. Manjusri Chaki and Ranjabati Sircar, Arunima’s journey has so far been joyous, and this joy finds reflection in her personal style.
As a kid of barely three years of age, Arunima started her formal training in dance in Bharatnatyam. The following few years saw her journey through many a Bharatnatyam and Odissi training School till she found her niche in the innovative and rebellious dance movement called Navanritya championed by Dr. Manjusri Chaki Sircar and Ranjabati Sircar. With their dance company, Dancers’ Guild began Arunima’s real journey. Her 14 long years of association with these iconoclastic women gave her the opportunity to be exposed to various traditional Indian and also, western contemporary forms. Above all, it has enriched and widened her spectrum of understanding and appreciation of a myriad medium of artistic expression.
Arunima has trained in Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Manipuri, Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, Thang-tha and Kandyan dance. Her undying passion for art and form has prompted her to absorb freely from western contemporary styles, the sensuous salsa and the Chinese martial arts. Arunima has performed at various venues across the country and overseas over the years, like the Konark dance festival, EZCC Festival, Nehru Centenary birth celebrations, Uday Shankar festival, The Copenhagen dance festival, World Expo & the ICCR Tour of Europe. She has also conducted many workshops on cultural exchange in India and abroad. Now she holds workshops for dance enthusiasts and choreographs for corporate programs. Arunima is an IWCF (India World Cultural Forum) empanelled artiste and wishes to spread Indian contemporary dance world over.
Apart from her serious involvement with dance, Arunima has a strong academic record. A Masters in English Literature (and also a B.Ed degree holder) from Kolkata University she free-lances as a Language/ Communication skill expert and life skills facilitator for various organizations and educational institutes. At present, her ideas find form and expression in Aangik-the brand name that endorses her unique style of dance.
‘‘Aangik’’, the Sanskrit word that forms the core inspiration for the company, means ‘gestures of the body‘. The forte of the company is very much the same. At Aangik the experimentation involves explorations and expressions of a myriad range of emotion with the body as a vehicle.
Innovative props and the creative use of stage space are the two other areas the dancers are constantly at work. Aangik endorses a unique form of dance called ‘Navanritya’. Navanritya is- a truly contemporary Indian form. It is the 'chemical synthesis' of traditional and classical dance forms, yoga, martial arts and the body dynamics of western modern dance
This unique form originated in Kolkata in mid 1950’s through the path-breaking experiments of an iconoclastic Bengali woman, late Dr. Manjusri Chaki Sircar.
