One of the foremost Odissi dancers of the new generation, Sharmila Biswas was initiated in dance by Kalavati Devi and Guru Bipin singh at Children’s Little Theatre, Calcutta. She received her training in Odissi dance under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra at the Padatik Dance Centre. Under the guidance of Kalanidhi Narayanan, she learnt abhinaya. She also attended the American Dance Festival Workshop of USA.
Over the last decade, Sharmila Biswas has established herself as a dancer of talent and commitment. She has researched in the Orissan percussion tradition of Khol for application in Odissi vision and Movement Centre, Calcutta, she has been engaged in teaching and experiments to enrich the scope and style of Odissi dance.
Sharmila Biswas has performed widely in India, featuring in events including Yuva Utsav and the Festival of Choreographic Works organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Konak Festival in Orissa, the I.T.C Golden Greats Festival, the Khajuraho dance Festival, and festivals organized by reputed Sabhas of Chennai. She has taken lead roles in several dance-dramas of her guru. She has also performed in the Festivals of India in USSR and Germany.
